CyberFest 2018 : CTF - Inter University Hackathon





In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the National Institute of Business Management, the Students of Ethical hacking and Network Security of Coventry University whom are also students of  the Cisco Networking Academy held The Inter- University hackathon “ CyberFest 2018 : CTF ” as a collaboration with Coventry University and The Cisco Networking Academy. With the participation of 40 teams from both National and Private Universities such as University of Colombo (UOC), University of Sri Jayewardenepura (UOSJP), University of Moratuwa (UOM), Kothalawala Defense University (KDU), NSBM, Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) and many more, the event was held on the 8th of September from 8.30 a.m onwards.





Talking about Capture The Flag which is most known as CTF, it consist of a series of challenges that vary in their degree of difficulty, and that require participants to exercise different skill sets to solve. Once an individual challenge is solved, a “flag” is given to the player and they submit this flag to the CTF server to earn points. Players can be lone wolves who attempt the various challenges by themselves, or they can work with others to attempt to score the highest number of points as a team. In CyberFest, the students themselves created this hackathon in 3 stages with 3 Virtual Machines in while first two stages we're based on Ubuntu Linux and the Final stage was designed with Windows. And as mentioned above, the degree of difficulty increases stage by stage including different challenges like programming, crypto, reverse engineering, exploitation and much more.



As the event came to an end, the winners were announced and awarded by Ms. Kalhari Kaluarachchi; Program Manager of Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Maldives and Bangladesh of Cisco Networking Academy and Ms. Carys Boland; the Partnership Manager of Coventry University.

While the event received many positive feedbacks, It ended with great success.
